Hello all,
I'm really glad to see there's a kinship with these principles Smile I hope you will let me join.

Here's my intro:
In RL my name's Karen but online I usually go by some variation of Chameleon or Chimera. It's Chameleon9691 on the LOTRO forums. I'm Scottish, female, 36, a single parent of two, and a final-year art student. Busy person at the moment

I've been into Tolkien and Middle-earth since reading The Hobbit when I was seven - I think The Lord of The Rings and The Silmarillion must be my most often-read books ever (my copy of The Sil literally fell apart after a while!) I took a lot of interest in the runes and letterings and languages of Middle-earth 10-15 years back but was limited to only what was in LotR and the Sil because I've only recently started to collect and read The History of Middle-earth series. So I'd say I'm a scholar of Sindarin, rather than a speaker of it.

I enjoyed the LOTR films except for a few gripes about storyline changes and some of the caricaturing that happened with the characters. I really, really liked the depth of detail put into the costume, props and scenery! If they ever make The Hobbit or parts of The Silmarillion into a film I'd love to be involved in it as an artist.

I'm really looking forward to the release of LOTRO. I'm not a particularly experienced online gamer, but I have played AC1 (current subscription but I haven't really got into it yet), AC2 (just before it ended) and Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (a couple of months of play). I'm more used to playing solo ... I think to play as part of a group it's better to know who you're playing with at least a little bit, so I hope that joining this kinship will help me find people I'll feel comfortable teaming up with.

I'm neither a power-gamer nor a roleplayer but I'm going to love exploring Middle-earth. The first characters I create will probably be an Elf and a Dwarf, both probably Loremasters, athough chances are I'll try other races and classes eventually too.

I have half-thought-out a backstory for the Elf: a Noldorin exile of Eregion, probably an Elvensmith, now living in the Ered Luin/ Ered Lindon area, on friendly terms with the Dwarves of the area. I'd ideally like to trace her back to Beleriand, to have been born on the Great Journey and seen Valinor in the time of the Trees. If that's the case she would have been one who crossed the Helcaraxe in Fingolfin's following but went with Galadriel to Doriath for a while, not becoming involved in the Wars. She didn't stay in Doriath for long though, and passed East over the Ered Luin and out of the knowledge of her people long before the Fall of Doriath. I think she wandered as far to the East as she could, being both curious and restless. By the time she returned, Gil-Galad's people were settling in Eregion and she settled with them, renewing ancient friendships. The reason she isn't mentioned in the histories is because she never sought power or renown, simply knowledge and new experience. She would basically be of a peaceable nature but able to defend herself and survive extremely capably in the wild.

How's that? 8) Now I have to come up with a name.

Welcome to Sanctuary, Chameleon. It definitely looks like you know you're stuff. Forget playable classes, if you want in you just might get assigned as our guild loremaster, as it's pretty obvious you know your stuff more than anyone here, (except maybe "temp," who is admittedly a little rusty). But I would like to warn you that you most definitely have a better handle of Tolkien than most others here. I myself have yet to finish the Silmarillion, although I am currently working on it. Smile

Your character idea looks great, just be aware that the actual playable race in the game will be "wood elves," and not high-elves. If you wish to role-play that you have seen the Two Trees, that's fine with us around here, but that's most likely not Turbine's intent, since those who have actually seen Valinor would be quite powerful elves, as opposed to the expectation that we will "grow in power."

In any case, you are welcome to join us here. Just out of curiousity, how'd you get linked to us? Was it a thread or signature on the official forums, or www.lotrmmorpg.com? In any case, welcome to the Sanctuary, and we're happy to have you here! 8)

Also, from the looks of one of your posts on the main forums, it looks like you're boys are interested in playing? If so, I will say it is my honest goal to keep the Sanctuary a place you can feel safe having them. They too are welcome to join and participate in the forums, providing they will adhere to the standard we hold all our members to: respect for others.

I'm sure they'd feel pretty comfortable around here anyways. Shedro and me generally act like 12-year-olds anyways. ^_^

LOL I'm happy to sign up for the loremaster post .. you may have noticed my char mirrors me not a little  Yep I know that Turbine don't allow playable Noldor, but I figured I can pretend it, and my char will look like a wood-elf after all that wandering anyhow. Or maybe a female Bombadil at such a venerable age <grin>. I think Turbine's reasons are lore-related - it's difficult to have a Noldo that isn't a superhero or doesn't mess up Tolkien's history by existing, and there wouldn't be just one, there'd be thousands. That's why mine didn't fight in Beleriand and turn out like Galadriel or Glorfindel. Strictly back-seat, an unnamed and unknown Noldo.

I found you on the new kinship list on the LOTRO forum. Sanctuary suits me and my game style to the ground Smile

Yes, my kids will want to play once I tell them about it. My son's 15 and my daughter will be 13 soon. They mainly got to know LOTR through the films (as well as me going "That's not right, they missed out [whatever from the book]!"). I will most likely get a router and a second LOTRO account if I can afford it, so there can be 2 out of the three of us playing at a time. But not until main release - I hope to be in the beta, of course. It'd be great to have my kids join Sanctuary too Smile because that helps me make sure their gameplay is a safe and positive experience.

The only possible drawback I can think of is that I'm in a different time zone from everyone else here.. but no doubt we can work round that when we know everyone's preferred times to be online.

Nice to meet you Smile

I had not considered that. Because of this exact fact, some MMO games have "US-only servers," "EU-only servers," "Asian-pacific only" etc. Other games have not done this. Hopefully, LOTRO will keep the community together. But these are things we are months away from finding out for sure, and until then, we would love to have you here with us. You have been added to our roster, so you should see some new threads opening.

Once again, welcome to Sanctuary. Smile

Thanks Smile

We'll just have to wait and see how they administrate the servers. I can't remember if it was AC1 or AC2, but I could access the US servers for one of those games, and they're Turbine too so maybe it won't be a problem. It was a bit strange, though, because the place was almost playerless until about 4pm my time (that'd be US east coast mid-morning-ish) and then suddenly filled up! I know Boston is about 6 hours behind me, give or take daylight saving, so does that make Arizona about 10 maybe?

/edit - sorry, I misread Arizona for Arkansas .. now I'm going to Google Earth to find out where Arkansas is exactly......

Laughing Laughing
Don't worry, I've been talking to different colleges here about graduate school, and I've found that even people in my own country don't know where it is.

We're an hour behind Boston, so that would make us 7 hours behind you. Except for "temp," who's in the same time zone as Boston, so he'd be 6 hours behind you. Also, LadyRoweena and I may likely be moving this Fall, putting us in that time zone as well. Smile

Boo to not finishing the similarion! Smile

reading over your analysis of fingolfin's (sorry for spelling) history, I have to admit without reservation that you're more versed in Tolkien's writings than I am. I really need to read the similarion again, but ah well.

Eventually I'll cure myself of this plague that is world of warcraft, and get myself back over here,,

Yep so do I ... actually I need to read the rest of HoME then reread from The Hobbit onwards. Read cover to cover, as opposed to looking up refs. I've been a full time student for a long time and it kind of mucks up your ability to spend time on other subjects even if you like them, cos you're too busy writing some essay or other or meeting a deadline. There's a quote I recall with ref to university study - "you don't read a book, you gut it" - well, I need to settle down and relearn the reading part.

Hahaha I have a friend who is addicted to WoW. I'm hoping he'll transfer that addiction to LOTRO when the time comes. I'm playing Asheron's Call at the moment, very low level and solo, so if anyone here also plays it and wants to team up, let me know.
