Since we have members on both side of the Atlantic here, I thought I'd cut and paste some of the stuff on the EU forums about servers.

Possible international server
I think as an international kinship, having an international server made available is something we would want if at all possible. It's not certain, though. The person I am quoting is Satine, the Codemasters community liaison manager on the EU boards:
Quote:
International servers would be something that would suit a lot of people and it's something Patience and myself are fighting your cause on. As some of you have astutely noticed, the problems with logistics, service separation and billing and the various numbers of partners involved make that a very challenging proposal to overcome.
Here's the link to her full post: http://community.codemasters.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1522730&postcount=34

Possible role-playing server
I'm not sure whether this is of interest to us but I thought I'd let you all know there's a petition out for a role-playing server to be created. http://community.codemasters.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112832

Also, Aquilla can you let me know if/when you want me to plug Sanctuary on the EU boards? I'm getting twitchy about it again seeing as beta is getting nearer Wink

I've thought a lot about this recently and I think I've finally got it all in one blob of putty in my mind. Yes, we're ready to recruit over at codemasters on the European front, I've made all the updates and gotten all the information that I think we'll need to get everyting together.

My one concern is being seen as the "leader" for a group of people I'll never get to play with. It would be fair to them to, and I'm not sure I'm comfortable taking on the level of "authority" or whatever you want to call this. If they do end up with an "international" server we can all play on, that would be great! Or, if our Europeans friends plan on getting US copies and playing on the US servers, I know lotrosource has stated they will help make that happen, and I'd be happy to be a part of the organizing as far as that goes.

But I'm not sure I would want to keep them as a separate group and I myself be considered their GM or leader or whatever, since I'm not ever going to get to actually play with them. We would need to find ain individual who is willing to be the GM for the European server, if there is one, that would administer and lead the Europeans side of the kinship on that server.

If we can find someone (Chameleon) that would be interested *coughChameleoncough* in taking the leadership position *Ahhh, aaahCHOOOchameleonOOOO* for the Europeans, then we're ready to start recruiting on the Codemaster's site. Very Happy

Yep, international servers would make it much easier for us as a kinship.

If we all buy US versions of the game, it sounds like it will definitely cost more for the EU folks, and even if Lotrosource can distribute copies to us it will probably take more time/effort to get the game. We get to keep the kinship together but we have to negotiate the timezone differences, which will be difficult for players who can't stay up all night. Apparently we also lose out in latency/lag.

If the EU folks buy the EU version, which is easier to get in the first place, we end up split as a kinship. I can see this as a viable possibility only if we have a fair-sized EU membership and can create a European chapter of Sanctuary.

Either way, I think it'd be good to get more Europeans on board. Even if we use US servers (or international servers for that matter) we may still end up as a sub-group because of the timezone issues. My major concern is to avoid the possibility of 2 or 3 of us getting stranded with the 'wrong' version of the game, unable to find kinship members to group with because they're in the wrong place at the wrong times.

As for leadership Shocked If I signed up for that, what would I have to do? Galadriel

The only thing I would see you needing to do is enforce our pledge on whatever EU server you decide to make a home on. Swearing, griefing, or trolling over at code-masters or on that server would be done by you. That's really the main thing; we'd need someone to take responsibility for our members over there. If any other kinship or player posts a copmlaint about one of our memberson the EU side of it, it would be handled by you.

I would love to think all of our members would be grown up and mature enough to always handle themselves accordingly, experience (and reason) dictates this might not be the case. I will leave it to you what level(s) of discipline should be enacted on them, but if a European member causes problems that I see regularly coming up on the forums, I may ban them from the forums. Other than that, server behavior would be up to you.

That's really all there would be to it. The only other thing would be if someone wanted to join from the EU side of things, if you could just put a
"thumb's up" on their application, I'll add all their priveleges around here and everything. I've already made separate organizational forums for the US and EU servers. If we get so large that we have a "council" or something like that, we'll elect members from both servers, or just let the EUs do things there own way. How's that sound?

If Chammy is looking for backup on the EU servers I'd be happy to help wherever possible. I have a pitchspork ready at hand and I know how to use it.

Ouch! Embarassed

* Turns pitchspork the right way up *

Anyone have a plaster?

Actually, Satine, the Codemaster's community representative (think Patience with a British accent Wink ) has said they are trying to negotiate the logistics of a potential "international" server. We'll see how it goes, though. If they do actually offer that, that's probably where we'll make our home. Smile
